Tel Aviv: An Indian pilot who faced a terrifying emergency aboard a passenger aircraft is set to receive a major civilian honour from Israel. Captain Smit Machchhar, a Flydubai pilot who was reportedly attacked inside the cockpit during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, has been selected for Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the recognition, highlighting Machchhar’s courage during an incident that threatened the safety of passengers and crew. The award is expected to be presented once the captain has recovered sufficiently.

Mid-Air Attack Triggered Emergency

The incident took place on September 30 aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073. According to reports, Machchhar was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot while the aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Despite suffering injuries, the Indian captain reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene. The aircraft experienced a steep descent amid the emergency, raising concerns about the safety of those on board.

The flight was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The captain’s actions and the response from others aboard the aircraft helped bring the situation under control.

Israel Also Recognises Six Civilians

Machchhar is not the only person being recognised for responding during the emergency. Six Israeli civilians who reportedly helped restrain the alleged attacker and assist during the incident have also received recognition for their actions.

Their intervention, alongside the efforts of the flight crew, played a role in managing the crisis. The incident has drawn attention to the risks airline crews can face when violence erupts inside an aircraft and the importance of coordinated action during emergencies.

Why the Award Matters

Israel’s decision to honour the Indian captain highlights the significance of his reported response under extraordinary circumstances. The incident also raises questions about cockpit security and the procedures airlines follow when a crew member becomes a threat.
