He Walked After Kidney Surgery, Died Next Morning: Family Seeks Answers After Anantnag Hospital Death
Srinagar: A 35-year-old man from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district died suddenly at a private hospital in Anantnag just hours after appearing to recover from kidney stone surgery, prompting his family to allege medical negligence and leading to a police inquiry. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over post-operative care, patient monitoring and accountability in private healthcare facilities.
The deceased, identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, a resident of Qaimoh area in Kulgam and son of Ghulam Nabi Wani, had been admitted to Mid City Private Hospital on KP Road in Naibasti, Anantnag, for treatment of kidney stones.
According to hospital officials, Wani underwent Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a minimally invasive surgical procedure widely used for removing large or complex kidney stones. Doctors said the procedure was completed successfully and the patient remained stable during the initial recovery period.
The hospital administration stated that Wani was showing signs of improvement after the surgery and was even able to walk on Friday evening. He was reportedly placed under routine post-operative care and prescribed oral medication before the sudden turn of events.
However, the situation changed dramatically the following morning when Wani reportedly collapsed while walking inside the hospital premises. Despite immediate medical attention, he could not be revived and was declared dead.
The unexpected death left the family devastated, with relatives questioning how a patient who appeared stable after surgery could die within a short span of time. Family members accused the hospital staff of negligence and staged a protest outside the medical facility, demanding a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Following the protest, police officials reached the hospital and began examining the matter. Authorities are verifying medical records, treatment details and statements from hospital representatives to establish the sequence of events.
Responding to the allegations, Dr Zahoor Gilkar of Mid City Hospital said Wani had undergone PCNL surgery and there were no immediate complications following the procedure.
The doctor maintained that the patient’s condition remained stable after surgery and that he was recovering normally. According to the hospital, the sudden collapse could possibly have been caused by a serious medical emergency, including embolism or myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack.
The hospital said it would be inappropriate to conclude that the death was linked to surgical complications without a detailed medical assessment. Officials added that the exact cause of death would be known only after the post-mortem examination.
The cause behind Mushtaq Ahmad Wani’s sudden death remains unclear as investigators await the post-mortem report. Police officials are currently collecting relevant information and assessing whether any medical negligence contributed to the tragedy.
At this stage, the allegations against the hospital remain unproven, and further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and medical examination.
