New Delhi: Ahead of the festive season, consumers may have to spend more on sweets and daily needs as sugar prices continue to rise across the country. With demand expected to increase during Raksha Bandhan, several retailers and quick-commerce platforms have reportedly started limiting sugar purchases amid concerns over declining supplies.

According to reports, customers on platforms like Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart are facing restrictions on the quantity of sugar they can order. Many consumers are being allowed to purchase only two to three packets of sugar per transaction.

Sugar Prices Rise 29% In One Month

The shortage concerns come at a time when sugar prices have witnessed a sharp increase. The average retail price of sugar has reportedly climbed to around ₹63 per kg, compared to nearly ₹48.7 per kg a month ago, marking an increase of about 29%.

The rise in prices has added pressure on households preparing for the festive season, when demand for sweets and sugar-based products traditionally increases.

Sugar Stocks Decline, Government Allows Imports

Analysts have estimated a significant decline in India's sugar inventories. The lower stock levels have pushed the government to allow the import of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar to improve domestic availability.

This marks the first time in nearly a decade that India has permitted such imports, highlighting concerns over supply pressure.

Quick Commerce Platforms Restrict Orders

The supply crunch is becoming visible on online grocery platforms as well. Customers have reportedly noticed purchase limits on multiple sugar brands, with platforms showing restrictions when users try to add larger quantities to their carts.

Retailers are closely monitoring supplies as festive demand continues to rise.

Prices May Remain High In Coming Months

Despite the government's import decision, experts believe sugar prices may remain under pressure in the short term. Rising demand during August and September could keep prices elevated before additional supplies enter the market.

For consumers, the festive season could bring higher expenses as sugar is a key ingredient in sweets, desserts and traditional preparations.
