Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has launched the “Lioness Special Task Force”, a dedicated unit aimed at enhancing the safety and protection of women and children in the state.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the force at the Rajaratnam Sports Complex in Egmore, Chennai, on June 9. The initiative is designed to prevent crimes against women and ensure immediate assistance in emergency situations.

Focus on Public Safety and Rapid Response

The task force has been deployed for intensive patrolling at bus stands, schools, colleges, and other crowded public areas. Special patrol vehicles and modern equipment have been provided to enhance operational efficiency and ensure swift response to distress situations.

Officials said the force operates under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister and is intended to strengthen women’s safety infrastructure across the state.

Awareness and Community Outreach

The initiative also includes awareness campaigns aimed at educating women and students on self-protection measures and how to approach police authorities in times of danger.

IG Bhavaneeswari is credited with suggesting the name “Lioness Special Task Force” for the unit.

On Vaikasi Amavasya, the force began field operations at Agni Theertha Beach, where personnel were deployed for crowd safety and security management. A public awareness drive was also conducted under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Shanmugapriya using loudspeaker announcements.

Kanimozhi Raises Concern Over Alleged Salem Case

Meanwhile, DMK MP Kanimozhi has expressed concern over an alleged sexual exploitation case involving a TVK functionary in Salem, calling for strict punishment and a fair investigation.

Addressing a meeting of the DMK Women’s Wing at Anna Arivalayam, she referred to reports alleging that a TVK executive had threatened women and recorded obscene videos involving multiple victims.

Kanimozhi said the allegations were “shocking” and stressed the need for a transparent probe, drawing parallels with the Pollachi sexual assault case, which had previously triggered widespread outrage in Tamil Nadu.

She urged authorities to ensure the safety of victims and guarantee justice, stating that protecting affected women should remain the top priority throughout the investigation.

Political discussions around the case continue to intensify, with opposition parties demanding accountability and strict action against those involved.
