New Delhi: Mobile users across India were caught off guard on Saturday morning when a piercing alarm sounded on their devices, accompanied by an “Extremely severe alert” notification. The unexpected message caused brief panic, with many people are unsure whether it signaled a real emergency.

The alert message clarified that it was only a test. It read that India is launching a Cell Broadcast system using indigenous technology for instant disaster warnings, assuring users that no action was required.

Government Confirms Planned System Test
The alert was part of a planned nationwide trial of a mobile-based disaster notification system. Earlier in the week, authorities had informed the public that such tests would take place and advised people not to panic upon receiving them.

Officials stated that the trials are being conducted ahead of the system’s formal rollout. The goal is to evaluate how effectively alerts can be delivered across different regions, devices, and network conditions.

How the Alert System Works
The new system is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), an international standard recommended for emergency communications. It allows authorities to broadcast critical alerts directly to mobile phones within a specific geographic area, even without internet access.

The technology ensures that messages can reach large populations quickly during disasters such as earthquakes, floods, or severe weather events.

Multiple Alerts May Be Sent During Testing
Authorities have warned that citizens may receive multiple test alerts over the coming days or weeks. These messages could appear in English, Hindi, or regional languages depending on the location and network.

The repeated alerts are part of efforts to ensure reliability and consistency before the system becomes fully operational.

Joint Effort by Key Agencies
The initiative is being carried out through coordination between the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority. Both agencies are working together to strengthen India’s emergency communication infrastructure.

Previous Trial Earlier This Year
A similar test was conducted in February, when users across both Android and iPhone devices reported receiving loud “Test Alert” notifications. That exercise also aimed to fine-tune the system’s reach and responsiveness.
