India Tariffs "Probably" Played Role In Putin Agreeing To Meet: Trump
New Delhi: Former US president and current Republican leader Donald Trump has linked the "secondary tariffs" imposed on India to his strategy to end the Russia-Ukraine war. In an interview with Fox News Radio, Trump said that the 50% tariff imposed on India prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to talk to him.
Trump's strategy: Influencing Putin with tariffs on India
Trump said, "Every step has an impact. The tariffs on India forced him (Putin) to think." He was referring to the fact that India reduced the purchase of oil from Russia, which created economic pressure on Putin.
- Trump-Putin meeting to be held in Alaska: The "feel-out" meeting (first informal talks) of the two leaders will be held on Friday. - Peace deal for Ukraine: Trump wants to include Ukraine's President Zelensky in the talks after talks with Putin.

India's response: "Unfair and unacceptable"
India has termed these tariffs of America as "unfair and unwanted." The government made it clear that it will retaliate to protect national interests. Although the strategic partnership with the US remains intact, there is a conflict over oil imports from Russia and trade surplus.
Europe's concern: Ukraine may suffer losses
European countries fear that the Trump-Putin talks could put pressure on Ukraine for an unfair peace deal. Analysts believe that if the US and Russia hurry to end the war, Ukraine may have to suffer geographical losses.
Trump's claim: "Six wars prevented this year"
In his interview, Trump also claimed that he has prevented six wars in 2024. He described the Ukraine war as "Joe Biden's legacy" and said that ending it is his priority.
Will Trump's strategy work?
Trump has tried to put indirect pressure on Russia by imposing tariffs on India. But India has made it clear that it will not compromise its energy security. Now the question is whether the Alaska talks will lead to any solution to the Ukraine war, or will they prove to be just a political move?
