Independence Day 2025: Which Country First Recognized India’s Independence?

As India celebrates its 79th Independence Day, historical records suggest the United States was likely the first nation to recognize newly independent India in 1947, establishing diplomatic ties even before August 15. While Britain, USSR and France followed, Iran became Pakistan’s first recognizer. Today, India maintains strategic non-recognition of territories like Taiwan and Kosovo.

New Delhi: This year on August 15, India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day. On this day in 1947, India gained independence from British rule and achieved the status of a sovereign nation. But for any country, just being independent is not enough, but getting international recognition is equally important. Only then does it get global recognition. Do you know which country first recognized India after independence?

Who gave first recognition to India?

There is no clear mention in history as to which country recognized India first, but according to many reports, America was the first country to formally accept India's independence. Interestingly, America had opened its embassy here even before India's independence, which indicates a strong foundation of bilateral relations. Apart from this, major countries like Britain, the USSR (Soviet Union), and France also soon recognized India as an independent nation.

Who first recognized Pakistan?

While India got the support of America and European countries, Pakistan was first recognized by Iran (then the Imperial State of Iran). Later other countries also established diplomatic relations with both the nations.

Which countries does India not recognize?

Even today there are some countries in the world that India does not recognize as independent nations. These include:

1. Abkhazia—which India considers a part of Georgia.

2. Kosovo – Despite being a member of the United Nations, India does not accept it.

3. Taiwan – Supporting China's "One China" policy, India does not consider Taiwan a separate country.

4. Somaliland – This region of Africa is not recognized by India.

India’s independence getting international recognition was a historic event, which established our identity on the global stage. Today India is one of the largest democracies in the world and maintains diplomatic relations with 140+ countries. However, India’s policy regarding some disputed regions is clear, which reflects its geopolitical thinking.

On this Independence Day, let us not only remember our freedom fighters but also salute the international allies who supported India’s struggle. Jai Hind!
