Trump said during a press conference in the Oval Office that earlier the trade balance between the US and India was disturbed. According to him, India was sending goods to the US without any tariff, while when the US exported something to India, a tariff of up to 100% was imposed by India.

Trump had warned India not to buy oil from Russia, but India continued its trade relations with Russia. For this reason, the US increased the already imposed 25% tariff on India to 50%. This move was a part of the US strategy to put pressure on Russia, and India was punished for not complying.
