Kishtwar: Two persons lost their lives after a landslide struck a project vehicle at the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) project site in the Dangdaro area of Kishtwar on Monday, officials said.

The incident occurred at the construction site where several workers were present when debris suddenly fell from a hillside, hitting a vehicle and trapping people under the rubble.

Rescue Operation Launched

Following the incident, rescue teams from concerned agencies rushed to the spot and launched a search operation to locate those trapped under the debris.

Officials confirmed that two bodies were recovered during the rescue efforts. The deceased have been identified as Shahnawaz Ahmed, a resident of Doda, and Nishat Ahmed, a resident of Palmar in Kishtwar district.

Fears of More People Trapped

Authorities said there were reports that more individuals might have been present in the vehicle when the landslide occurred. Rescue personnel continued clearing debris and scanning the area in an attempt to locate any other possible victims.

Meanwhile, in view of the inclement weather, the authorities have ordered the closure of all educational institutions outside the municipal limits in Kishtwar and adjoining Doda district for Monday as a precautionary measure, the officials said.

Officials stated that search and rescue operations were still underway at the time of the last report. Teams were working carefully at the site due to the unstable terrain and the possibility of further debris movement.
