New Delhi: Senior BJP leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and former Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice President of India. He won the coveted post by defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy in a direct contest. Let us take a look at five major milestones in his life and career that tell the story of his success.
CP Radhakrishnan was born on 4 May 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration. He began his political career as a volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 1974, he became a state executive member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. This was the first major step in his political journey.

In 1996, he was made the secretary of the Tamil Nadu BJP. After this, in 1998, he was elected as a Lok Sabha MP for the first time from Coimbatore and was re-elected in 1999. As an MP, he worked on issues related to the textile sector as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee. He was also a member of the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and Financial Affairs Committees.

In 2004, Radhakrishnan attended the United Nations General Assembly as a member of the Indian Parliamentary delegation. He was also a member of the first parliamentary delegation to Taiwan, which increased his understanding of foreign policy and international affairs.

He was the President of Tamil Nadu BJP from 2004 to 2007. During this time he did a 19,000 km long 'Rath Yatra', which lasted for 93 days. Through this journey, he raised important issues like interconnection of Indian rivers, ending terrorism, implementing Uniform Civil Code, eradicating untouchability and spreading awareness against drugs.
In 2023, he was appointed Governor of Jharkhand and in 2024, he was sworn in as Governor of Maharashtra. Considering his administrative capabilities and political experience, the NDA made him the candidate for the post of Vice President. Today he has won this election comfortably by defeating the opposition candidate.
