New Delhi: A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across eastern and central India in the final week of October. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intensification of the existing low-pressure area, raising concerns over possible flooding, strong winds and thunderstorms in several states.
According to the reports, a low pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeastern areas is expected to move west-northwestwards. It could strengthen into a depression by October 24 and a deep depression by October 25. The system may further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26.
The weather system is expected to move towards the northern Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southern Odisha coasts, although its eventual track and intensity will depend on subsequent meteorological updates.
Delhi is expected to experience hazy sunshine on Saturday with the maximum temperature reaching around 32°C and the minimum settling near 20°C. The day will remain warm, with limited chances of rain and mostly dry conditions expected through the evening.
Air quality is forecast to remain very unhealthy, posing potential risks, particularly for children, older adults and people with respiratory problems. Residents are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activities and consider wearing a well-fitting mask when stepping outside.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may experience rainfall between October 27 and 29, with very heavy downpours possible in isolated areas on October 27 and 28.
Odisha is also expected to receive widespread rainfall from October 26 to 29. Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast in parts of the state, with isolated locations potentially witnessing intense downpours. Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas should closely monitor official weather advisories.
Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also possible across coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema on October 26 and 27. Wind speeds could reach 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph.
The developing system could influence weather conditions in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast in different areas between October 27 and 29, with isolated heavy rainfall possible.
Separately, a low-pressure area over the southeastern Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep region is expected to bring rain to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and nearby areas.
People in areas facing heavy rainfall warnings should follow IMD updates, avoid waterlogged roads and take precautions against thunderstorms and strong winds. Forecasts and warning levels may change as the systems develop.
