Weather: Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir to witness rain and hail; Delhi braces for showers

Weather conditions across North India are set to turn unstable due to multiple western disturbances, according to India Meteorological Department. Delhi is under a yellow alert for rain, lightning and strong winds. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and nearby regions may witness rain, hailstorms and snowfall, while fog and temperature fluctuations could affect travel and daily activities.

New Delhi: The weather in North India is set to change rapidly due to a series of western disturbances. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds are expected in several states, including Delhi-NCR, starting 23 January. In view of this, a yellow alert has been issued in Delhi.

Rain and Strong Wind Alert in Delhi-NCR

According to the IMD's forecast, light to moderate rain is expected in Delhi on Friday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds of up to 40 to 50 kmph are expected during this period. After the rain, the maximum temperature is expected to drop to 19 to 21 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.

Several Western Disturbances Cause Weather Changes

A western disturbance is currently active at an altitude of about 3.1 km above northern Pakistan. Additionally, a trough has formed in the upper atmosphere at an altitude of 5.8 km. Another western disturbance is active over northeastern Iran, while a cyclonic circulation is observed over northwestern Uttar Pradesh. The subtropical westerly jet stream is also contributing to unstable weather.

Snowfall and Rain in Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir

Heavy rain and snowfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad. These areas may receive rainfall ranging from 64.5 to 115.5 mm. Snow has already fallen on the high peaks of Lahaul-Spiti, including Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh. An orange alert has been issued for heavy snowfall in Kullu, Chamba, and Lahaul-Spiti, while a yellow alert is in effect for other areas.

Impact in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan

Rainfall accompanied by hail and thunderstorms is expected in Punjab and Haryana. Strong winds of 50 to 60 kmph are expected in Haryana. Thunderstorms and strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely in eastern Rajasthan, while light to moderate rain is expected in western Rajasthan.

Fog and Temperature Warning

According to the IMD, dense fog is likely in the morning and night in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on January 23rd. Fog conditions may also develop in Rajasthan between January 24th and 26th. Minimum temperatures in northwest India may increase by 2 to 4 degrees over the next two days, but cold weather is expected to return after that.

Weather may also deteriorate in coastal areas

A severe weather warning has been issued for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Arabian Sea. Wind speeds in the Arabian Sea may reach up to 65 kmph. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
