New Delhi: In today’s fast-changing world, good parenting plays a vital role in shaping a child’s character and future. While advice comes from social media, books, and relatives, Indian tradition also offers powerful lessons.

The divine couple Shiva and Parvati are often seen as symbols of balanced and mindful parenting. On the occasion of Mahashivratri, here are four key parenting lessons inspired by them:

1. Never Compare Your Children

Every child is unique. The sons of Shiva and Parvati -Ganesha and Kartikeya - have completely different personalities. Ganesha is known for wisdom and patience, while Kartikeya represents courage and action. Despite their differences, their parents never compared them.

Lesson: Recognize your child’s individuality and nurture their natural strengths instead of comparing them with others.

2. Stay United as Parents

Shiva and Parvati have contrasting personalities - Shiva is calm and detached, while Parvati is nurturing and family-oriented. Yet, they respect and support each other. Even during difficult moments, such as the episode involving Ganesha’s beheading, they ultimately worked together to restore harmony.

Lesson: Differences in parenting styles are natural, but unity and mutual respect in front of children create a secure environment.

3. Teach with Love, Not Fear

Shiva is known for both his innocence and his intense anger. The story of Ganesha’s beheading highlights how actions taken in anger can have consequences. However, the situation ultimately led to Ganesha becoming widely revered and wise.

Lesson: Discipline should not be driven by fear. Instead of reacting in anger, guide children with calm explanations and understanding.

4. Give Children Freedom to Choose Their Path

Though protective parents, Shiva and Parvati allowed their sons to follow their own destinies. Kartikeya embarked on his own journey, while Ganesha accepted responsibilities early in life.

Lesson: Protect your children, but also empower them. Allow them the freedom to explore, make choices, and grow independently.

These timeless lessons remind us that balanced parenting - built on understanding, unity, patience, and freedom - lays the foundation for a child’s strong and confident future.
