Why did the government choose JP Nadda not Amit Shah or Dharmendra Pradhan to begin talks with the CJP delegation? Four key reasons explain why the BJP trusted its seasoned troubleshooter.

New Delhi: The Centre’s decision to field Union Minister and former BJP president JP Nadda for its first formal talks with the Cockroach Janta Party delegation has triggered speculation over why he was selected for the politically sensitive outreach.

Nadda met two CJP representatives at his official residence as protests intensified in Delhi. The delegation submitted its demands, while Nadda reportedly said the issues would be discussed within the government and appealed for the agitation to end. No firm commitment was announced after the meeting.

Here are four factors that may have influenced the government’s choice.

1. A Less Confrontational Political Image

Nadda is generally viewed as a measured political organiser rather than an aggressive public face. His relatively low-key approach made him a suitable choice for beginning talks without further escalating tensions.

By hearing the delegation and promising internal deliberations, the government could open a communication channel without immediately accepting or rejecting the demands.

2. Access to the BJP’s Top Leadership

As a senior Cabinet minister and former BJP national president, Nadda has direct access to the party’s highest decision-making level. This gives greater political weight to any assurance that the protesters’ concerns will be placed before the government leadership.

Nadda served as BJP national president from 2020 to 2024 and remains one of the party’s senior-most figures. His involvement signalled that the government considered the situation politically significant.

Sending a senior leader also avoided the perception that the protesters were being handled only by junior officials.

4. Experience in Sensitive Political Outreach

Nadda has previously participated in the BJP’s political communication during major protests and contentious policy debates. His ability to balance the government’s position with appeals for dialogue may have made him a natural choice for the CJP engagement.

The meeting represented the first major opening for negotiations after days of confrontation, though the dispute remained unresolved and the protesters said they had received no definite assurance.

Demands by CJP

A delegation of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokespersons on Monday met BJP president JP Nadda amid the ongoing "Chalo Sansad" protest and submitted three key demands related to the student movement and alleged irregularities in the education system.

Speaking after the meeting, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said JP Nadda requested some time to consult with the party leadership before responding to the demands.

• Resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
• Rs 1 crore compensation for the family of every NEET aspirant who died by suicide.
