The issue traces back to the Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas, where Sharma was deployed by the Election Commission. A video that circulated widely on social media showed him visiting the residence of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate and warning family members against any alleged voter intimidation or misconduct. In the video, he is heard cautioning them about strict consequences if complaints arise.
TMC Hits Back
The TMC strongly objected to Sharma’s conduct, calling it intimidation. The party’s candidate from the area pushed back publicly, saying no one would be allowed to threaten voters. The situation quickly turned into a political face-off, with sharp rhetoric from both sides.
TMC leader Mahua Moitra further intensified the controversy by sharing an old video of Sharma online and mocking him with the nickname “Fair & Lovely Babua.” The party has also questioned how an officer facing past allegations can be entrusted with ensuring free and fair elections.
Legal Battle Reaches Supreme Court
The dispute has now moved to the courts. After an initial plea failed to get immediate relief in the Calcutta High Court, a PIL was filed in the Supreme Court challenging Sharma’s appointment. The petition argues that an election observer must remain neutral and that his actions undermine confidence in the electoral process.
Fresh Allegations Add Fuel
Amid the growing tensions, a local woman in Falta has filed a police complaint accusing Sharma and central forces of misconduct, including forced entry and coercion related to voting. These allegations have further deepened the political divide.
In a related development, the Election Commission has transferred a local election official from the constituency with immediate effect, indicating concern over the situation.
