New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the Women’s Reservation Bill as one of the most significant decisions of the 21st century, asserting that it will redefine India’s democratic and social landscape.

Speaking at the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan’ held at Vigyan Bhawan, he said the country stands united in support of the legislation.

Call for Implementation by 2029

Emphasising urgency, the Prime Minister said the law must be implemented by 2029, noting that the proposal comes after decades of discussion. He highlighted the importance of cooperation among political parties, stating that the government aims to ensure the bill is executed through dialogue and consensus.

Women’s Role in Governance Highlighted

Modi underlined the growing influence of women in decision-making processes, pointing out that increased participation leads to more inclusive and sensitive governance.

He cited the success of grassroots initiatives, particularly in Panchayati Raj institutions, where women have played a vital role in driving development and welfare schemes.

Strengthening Social Justice and Equality

Calling the bill a step towards an egalitarian society, the Prime Minister said it marks the beginning of a new chapter in India’s journey toward social justice. He added that women’s representation in legislative bodies would strengthen democracy and better reflect the aspirations of the population.

Policy Measures Supporting Women

Highlighting government initiatives, Modi referred to the extension of maternity leave to 26 weeks, describing it as a progressive step to ensure women’s careers are not disrupted. He also mentioned skill development and vocational training programmes aimed at empowering women economically.

Broad Political Support

The event saw participation from several leaders, including former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Union Minister Annpurna Devi termed the bill a symbol of determination and empowerment, while Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed strong backing, saying women across the country support the move.
