Lucknow: The Congress has appointed three-time Rampur Khas MLA Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’ as the new president of its Uttar Pradesh unit, replacing Ajay Rai. The organisational change comes months ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Mishra, daughter of senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, has also served as the Congress Legislature Party leader in the state Assembly. Her appointment puts her at the centre of the party’s preparations for the upcoming election.

Focus on Samajwadi Party alliance

One of the immediate challenges before the new state chief will be coordination with the Samajwadi Party. Speaking to NDTV, Mishra described the SP as a strong partner of the INDIA bloc and said she would work to take the alliance forward.

She also referred to the performance of the Congress-SP alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, when the INDIA bloc won 43 of the state’s 80 seats. Mishra said the alliance had demonstrated its effectiveness and would be strengthened ahead of the 2027 polls.

Congress announces new UP team

Alongside Mishra’s appointment, the Congress has made several changes to its Uttar Pradesh organisation. Saharanpur MP Imran Masood has been named working president, while Chaudhary Virendra Singh has been appointed Leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad have been named senior vice presidents of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. Rajendra Pal Gautam is the party’s AICC in-charge for the state.

Seat-sharing talks ahead

The Congress and Samajwadi Party are expected to face negotiations over seat-sharing as preparations for the 2027 Assembly election intensify. Reports indicate that the Congress is seeking a larger share of seats, while the SP has maintained that its position in the state gives it a strong negotiating position.
