Kolkata: A tense atmosphere prevailed in several areas of West Bengal during the second phase of voting for the Assembly elections. On polling day, reports of violence, physical assaults, and vandalism emerged from regions such as Chapra, Shantipur, and Bhangar. These incidents have raised serious questions regarding the peaceful and fair conduct of the electoral process.

Disputes and Clashes at Polling Stations

Priyanka Tibrewal, the BJP candidate from the Entally constituency, became embroiled in a dispute with polling officials and security personnel. It was reported that her representative was asked to leave the premises due to the small size of the polling station. During this altercation, an argument also ensued with a TMC representative, following which both individuals were asked to leave the premises.

The BJP alleged that the voting process was being obstructed.

Attack on BJP Worker

In Chapra, Nadia district, a BJP worker named Mosharif Mir was allegedly attacked. It is alleged that several TMC workers assaulted him with sticks and batons, leaving him injured and necessitating his hospitalization.

This incident has created an atmosphere of fear and tension in the area.

Damage to Offices and Property

In Shantipur, a BJP office was vandalized, resulting in damage to furniture. Meanwhile, in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas, allegations surfaced that a polling agent was prevented from entering a polling station.

Bikash Sardar, a BJP candidate, also had his car attacked and its windows smashed.

Violence Captured on Video

Several viral videos surfaced showing security forces dragging an individual, while some personnel were seen striking him with sticks. These visuals have further heightened the tension surrounding the electoral atmosphere.

Mamata Banerjee's Allegations

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leveled serious allegations against the central security forces. She asserted that these forces are acting at the behest of the BJP and are specifically targeting her supporters. He also alleged that outsiders and observers were attempting to influence the election, undermining the integrity of the democratic process and favoring the ruling party's agenda.

The violence and mutual recriminations witnessed during the second phase of voting in West Bengal have significantly heated up the electoral atmosphere. While political parties trade serious allegations against one another, concerns regarding security and fairness have intensified among the general public. It now remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the subsequent phases.
