New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress during an election rally in Assam, alleging that the party is planning to introduce a “dangerous communal law” if it comes to power in the state.
Addressing a gathering in Gogamukh in Dhemaji district, Modi urged voters to remain cautious, claiming that the proposed legislation would unfairly impact the majority community.

Expressing confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral prospects, Modi said the party is set to secure a third consecutive term in Assam. He described the upcoming election as an opportunity to continue what he called a decade of “service and good governance” under BJP rule.
The Prime Minister also took an indirect swipe at Congress leadership, predicting another electoral setback for the party in the state.

Modi alleged that the Congress was attempting to revive a law similar to a proposed communal violence legislation from before 2014. According to him, that earlier bill was opposed by the BJP and its allies, who argued it could lead to discrimination against the majority population.
He claimed that a similar proposal in Assam could have serious consequences if implemented.
The remarks come in response to statements by Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, who recently promised a strict law against hate speech if the party forms the government. Gogoi had said such legislation would prescribe up to five years’ imprisonment for those making remarks against any religion or its followers.
Modi also accused the Congress of encouraging divisive politics and alleged that the party had historically supported illegal infiltration in Assam. He claimed such actions had affected local communities, including tribals and farmers.
He added that the current BJP-led government is working to remove illegal encroachments and safeguard indigenous populations.
Highlighting the BJP’s election manifesto, Modi said the party has outlined 31 commitments aimed at boosting development, industrial growth and social progress in Assam.
He emphasised that the state has witnessed improved peace and stability over the past decade and projected further growth, adding that Assam’s identity is expanding beyond tea production to include new industries.
