40% MLA ticket cut reports create buzz ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections (Img: X)
Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Party has accelerated its preparations for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with the process of identifying potential candidates expected to gain momentum in the coming months.
Sources indicate that the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh is planning to prepare candidate panels for all Assembly seats by the end of November. The exercise is aimed at finalising the election strategy before the expected ticket distribution process begins.
The BJP’s biggest challenge in the state is reportedly managing anti-incumbency concerns and dissatisfaction among voters and party workers against some sitting legislators. To address these issues, the party has started internal assessments and surveys across Assembly constituencies.
The election preparations gained attention after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Delhi on September 26 and held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Nitin Nabin.
The discussions reportedly focused on the political situation in Uttar Pradesh, organisational strategy and preparations for the Assembly polls.
The meetings come at a time when the BJP is working on strengthening its ground network and reviewing the performance of its elected representatives before deciding its candidate strategy.
According to sources, the BJP is conducting surveys in constituencies where it currently has MLAs to understand public feedback, local issues and the level of support for sitting representatives.
The party is also reportedly seeking feedback from local workers and organisational leaders before preparing candidate panels.
Seats where there is significant dissatisfaction against sitting MLAs are expected to receive special attention during the candidate selection process.
The objective is to identify candidates who can maintain voter connect, strengthen booth-level organisation and improve electoral performance.
Sources suggest that a significant number of sitting BJP MLAs could face changes in the upcoming election candidate list.
Reports indicate that around 40 per cent of current BJP legislators may not receive tickets, with the party considering younger leaders, fresh faces and candidates with stronger public connect.
The BJP is also exploring the possibility of giving opportunities to younger members from political families of senior leaders as part of its generational transition strategy.
However, the final decision on candidates will depend on surveys, organisational feedback and approval from the party leadership.
The BJP has reportedly identified the Braj region and eastern Uttar Pradesh as priority areas for its election preparation.
These regions are being closely reviewed after the party’s comparatively weaker performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and a decline in Assembly seat numbers compared with its 2017 performance.
The party’s strategy is expected to focus on improving booth management, strengthening local leadership and selecting candidates who can regain voter confidence.
Apart from its own constituencies, the BJP is also examining the position of seats held by its alliance partners in Uttar Pradesh. The party wants to evaluate the ground situation of alliance constituencies before the final ticket-sharing and candidate selection process.
The assessment will help the BJP plan its wider election strategy and coordinate with partners ahead of the Assembly polls.
Sources indicate that the BJP aims to complete the initial candidate panel preparation by mid-November or the end of November. After this, the party is expected to move towards finalising its broader election strategy, including candidate selection, campaign planning and organisational activities.
The final list of candidates will depend on multiple factors, including survey reports, caste equations, regional balance, voter feedback and party workers’ recommendations. The upcoming months are expected to remain crucial as political parties prepare for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election battle.
