Srinagar: Mehbooba Mufti, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday voiced support for the people of Iran and urged the Union government to reconsider its policy towards the country.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Mufti said a meeting of former PDP MLAs passed a resolution expressing solidarity with Iran amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia.

Calls for Prayers and Peaceful Solidarity

Mufti also appreciated residents of Kashmir for holding peaceful demonstrations in support of the Iranian people. She appealed to the public to offer prayers for Iran and the broader Muslim community.

Highlighting historical ties, she said that Islam reached Kashmir through cultural and spiritual links with Iran, which she described as a reflection of the long-standing civilisational relationship between the two regions.

Concerns Over Impact of Wars

The PDP leader warned that conflicts and wars have wider global consequences. According to her, escalating hostilities not only affect the countries directly involved but also disturb the global economy and international stability.

She also called on Muslim-majority countries to extend support to Iran during the ongoing tensions.

Appeal for Release of Protestors

Mufti further appealed to the administration led by Manoj Sinha to review the arrests of people who participated in solidarity protests and release those still detained.

She also welcomed the revocation of detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, though she remarked that such action should not have been taken initially.

Referring to jailed separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, Mufti said many economically weaker prisoners struggle to pursue legal relief and deserve attention from authorities.
