A meeting of the Congress Working Committee where the party’s roadmap on political issues and elections
New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet on September 29 to discuss the party's roadmap for upping the ante against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the government in light of reports of differences within the Election Commission over SIR.
The meeting, chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, will be attended by about 50 top Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, K C Venugopal, Ambika Soni, Jairam Ramesh, Congress chief ministers and others.
The party's highest decision-making body will strategise on ramping up pressure over its demand for Gyanesh Kumar's removal and cornering the government over the issue.
The party's readiness for the upcoming assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand will also be at the top of the agenda.
Particularly, the party's alliance and seat-sharing with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh will be discussed. While Congress is demanding between 100 and 150 seats, the Samajwadi Party is not willing to give more than 50 to 60 seats, sources said.
The Congress on Thursday alleged that Gen Z is being targeted for exclusion and pressed that Gyanesh Kumar must resign immediately. It blamed both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, holding them responsible for their "diabolical designs".
The Congress' attack comes a day after an Indian Express report said that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected on record 14 times over the last 10 months to decisions and orders that they said were issued without their notice and knowledge, even as the national rollout of the SIR was under the supervision of the full commission.
Their objections covered the manner in which the statutory voter registration Form 6 was amended, the handling of additions and deletions from the voter lists, and centralised control over the electoral roll database, according to the report.
