New Delhi: The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election results for 2026 have brought a dramatic outcome after a closely contested battle between major student organisations. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) emerged victorious on three of the four central panel posts, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen secured the Vice-President position.
ABVP’s Yash Dabas won the President’s post, Riya Chhawdi secured the Secretary position and Lakshya Raj Singh emerged victorious as Joint Secretary. Deepanshu Shokeen, who contested as an independent candidate after not receiving a ticket from NSUI, defeated major contenders to win the Vice-President seat.
The results attracted widespread attention as DUSU elections have traditionally been considered a major indicator of student political trends and youth engagement in national-level political discourse.
The counting of votes began at 8 am at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in Delhi University’s North Campus.
After multiple rounds of counting, ABVP maintained its advantage in three major contests. The presidential race remained highly competitive, with the lead changing several times before the final result was announced.
ABVP’s Yash Dabas won the President election with 24,576 votes, defeating NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena, who received 22,523 votes.
The final victory margin stood at 2,053 votes, making the presidential contest one of the closest battles of the election.
## Independent Candidate Deepanshu Shokeen Creates Biggest Surprise
The biggest surprise of the DUSU election was the victory of independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen in the Vice-President contest.
Shokeen secured 30,615 votes, emerging as the highest vote-getter among all four central panel winners.
He defeated ABVP’s Ishu Maurya, who received 16,910 votes, while NSUI candidate Vir Chatrath finished with 4,313 votes.
Shokeen’s victory became a major talking point because he entered the election as an independent candidate after not receiving the NSUI ticket.
His win highlighted the influence of independent candidates in campus politics and showed that student voters also considered alternatives beyond established organisations.
ABVP continued its strong performance in other central panel contests.
Riya Chhawdi won the Secretary post with 21,650 votes, defeating NSUI’s Namrata Chaudhary, who secured 14,869 votes.
In the Joint Secretary election, ABVP’s Lakshya Raj Singh won a closely fought contest with 16,641 votes.
Independent candidate Vishesh Yadav finished second with 15,778 votes, while NSUI’s Gopal Choudhary received 15,106 votes.
The narrow margin in the Joint Secretary contest reflected the competitive nature of this year’s DUSU election.
The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) contested all four major central panel positions but failed to win any seat.
The election remained a major challenge for NSUI as it attempted to regain influence among Delhi University students.
The AISA-SFI alliance and several independent candidates also participated in the election, adding multiple layers to the campus political competition.
The 2026 DUSU election recorded a voter turnout of 40.46%.
More than 1.51 lakh students were eligible to participate in the election held across 52 polling centres.
Students from day colleges voted between 8:30 am and 1 pm, while evening college students participated between 3 pm and 7:30 pm.
A total of 20 candidates contested the four central posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint Secretary.
The DUSU election campaign remained under close monitoring due to concerns over clashes, campaigning violations and student safety issues.
The Delhi High Court had imposed restrictions on victory celebrations, including bans on processions, drums and certain public displays after the declaration of results.
Authorities focused on maintaining law and order around Delhi University campuses during the election process.
Security arrangements were strengthened to prevent any disruption during voting and counting.
With the declaration of results, the newly elected DUSU central panel will now begin its term for the 2026-27 academic session.
