New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has dismissed reports suggesting internal differences among its members over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, stating that all major decisions were taken collectively.
Sources within the poll body said that the Chief Election Commissioner and the two Election Commissioners were in agreement on decisions related to SIR and other matters. The clarification came after reports raised questions over possible disagreements within the three-member panel.
The Election Commission maintained that its functioning follows established procedures and every important decision is discussed among all members before approval.
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has become a major issue of discussion in recent weeks. The exercise aims to verify and update voter lists across different regions.
Reports of alleged objections by some Election Commissioners had triggered debate over the decision-making process within the poll panel. According to earlier reports, concerns were raised regarding certain steps linked to voter registration and electoral roll management.
The Election Commission, however, has maintained that the SIR exercise is being carried out under legal provisions to ensure accurate electoral rolls.
The reports of alleged differences within the Election Commission led to reactions from opposition parties, which sought clarity over the functioning of the constitutional body.
The EC’s latest clarification comes amid wider discussions around transparency, voter verification and the process of updating electoral rolls.
The SIR exercise has also come under judicial scrutiny. The Supreme Court recently raised concerns over certain notices issued during the revision process and sought clarification from the Election Commission regarding the procedure followed.
The Election Commission has said that notices issued during verification do not automatically mean removal from electoral rolls and are part of the checking process.
