New Delhi: In a significant political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dealt major blows to two of India’s most prominent regional leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee by defeating them in their respective strongholds.
Months after winning the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP has now secured a decisive victory in West Bengal, marking a rare double setback for opposition heavyweights.
In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing dominance came to an end as she lost her Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The defeat is particularly significant given Bhabanipur’s status as her political stronghold for over a decade.
Banerjee had previously relied on the constituency to secure her position as chief minister, including in 2011 and 2021. However, the 2026 verdict has altered that narrative, with the BJP also set to form its first government in the state.
The contest between Banerjee and Adhikari has defined Bengal politics in recent years. After leaving the Trinamool Congress in 2020, Adhikari emerged as a key BJP leader, defeating Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021.
The latest result further strengthens his position and underscores the BJP’s growing influence in the state.
Earlier, in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal also suffered a shock defeat in his New Delhi constituency. BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma defeated him by a margin of around 4,000 votes.
Kejriwal, who had dominated Delhi politics with landslide victories in 2015 and 2020, not only lost his seat but also saw his party fall short of a majority.
These back-to-back victories highlight a broader shift in India’s political landscape. Leaders once considered nearly unbeatable in their regions have faced unexpected defeats, indicating evolving voter preferences and changing dynamics.

The BJP’s ability to break into established strongholds suggests a growing national footprint beyond its traditional base.
With Delhi turning and Bengal breached, the BJP has now toppled two leaders once seen as politically unassailable in their own strongholds, further shrinking the opposition’s footprint on India’s political map. The party has already hinted at its next target its Punjab unit declaring “Next: Punjab” after the Bengal victory.
With victories in Delhi and West Bengal, the BJP has further strengthened its position across key states. The results also narrow the space for opposition parties, raising questions about their future strategies.
