New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following her party’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, alleging large-scale irregularities in the counting process.
Banerjee claimed that “more than 100 seats were looted” and described the outcome as an “immoral victory,” even as the BJP surged past the majority mark in the state.
Addressing the media, Banerjee questioned the role of the Election Commission and alleged that her party’s complaints were not addressed. She further claimed that irregularities took place during counting, including restricted access for party agents.
The TMC chief also alleged instances of intimidation and disruptions at counting centres, raising concerns over the transparency of the process.
Despite the setback, Banerjee struck a defiant note, asserting that the Trinamool Congress would return stronger. She urged party workers not to lose morale and emphasised that the political battle was far from over.
Earlier in the day, she had appealed to candidates and counting agents to remain at centres and stay vigilant, expressing hope that the trends could change in later rounds.
The BJP, however, continued its strong performance, crossing the halfway mark of 148 seats with ease. At the time of reporting, the party was leading in over 200 constituencies, indicating a landslide victory.
This marks a dramatic turnaround in West Bengal’s political landscape, where Banerjee’s party had secured a dominant mandate in the previous election.

The defeat signals the end of the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the party had won a two-thirds majority, while the BJP had a significantly smaller presence.
The current results highlight a major shift in voter sentiment and a new phase in Bengal politics, with the BJP emerging as the dominant force.
