New Delhi: A fresh increase in petrol and diesel prices has triggered a political confrontation between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi accusing the Centre of burdening citizens amid rising inflation.

Fuel prices were revised upward again on Monday, marking the fourth increase in less than two weeks. Petrol prices rose by ₹2.61 per litre, while diesel became costlier by ₹2.71 per litre across major cities.

Rahul Gandhi Targets Centre Over Rising Inflation

Reacting to the latest hike, Rahul Gandhi criticised the Narendra Modi-led government and claimed the increase in fuel prices was adding pressure on households already struggling with inflation.

In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi alleged that the government had delayed price revisions during election season and resumed hikes immediately afterward. He also warned that the economic situation could worsen further if inflationary trends continue.

The Congress leader described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “Inflation Man” and accused the government of making promises during elections while increasing the financial burden on ordinary citizens later.

The remarks come at a time when fuel costs are affecting transportation expenses and contributing to higher prices of daily essentials in several parts of the country.

BJP Defends Government’s Handling Of Crisis

The BJP strongly countered Rahul Gandhi’s criticism, accusing the Congress leader of spreading negativity and attempting to create unrest over the issue.

Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the government had managed to shield consumers from a major fuel shock despite prolonged global instability linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis.

According to the BJP, India avoided significant fuel price increases for nearly two months even as international crude oil prices remained volatile. The party argued that the Centre had prioritised protecting citizens from the direct impact of global disruptions.

Bhatia also claimed that the opposition was ignoring the broader international situation and the pressure faced by oil-importing countries.

Fuel Prices Continue To Climb

Following the latest revision, petrol prices crossed ₹102 per litre in Delhi and ₹111 in Mumbai. Diesel rates also moved closer to the ₹100 mark in several metro cities.

The continued rise in fuel costs has sparked concerns about inflation, transport expenses and household budgets, while political parties continue to trade charges over the government’s economic management.
