Dehradun: Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has stepped down from his positions in the Congress following an Enforcement Directorate (ED) action involving his close aide Chandan Singh Jeena. The move has created a fresh political storm in the state.
Rawat announced his resignation from party responsibilities after the ED’s search operation at Jeena’s residence reportedly led to the recovery of cash, gold jewellery and other valuables. The agency’s action has brought renewed attention to the case and intensified political discussions in Uttarakhand.
The ED action has increased pressure on the Congress leadership, with opposition parties targeting the party over the developments. The investigation is reportedly connected to allegations related to the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission (UKSSSC) recruitment matter.
Following the controversy, Harish Rawat decided to distance himself from organisational posts. However, the veteran Congress leader has maintained that allegations against his aide should not be considered proven until the investigation reaches a conclusion.
Despite stepping down from party positions, Rawat has expressed confidence in the legal process and questioned the allegations surrounding Chandan Singh Jeena. He has indicated that facts should emerge through a proper investigation rather than political claims.
Harish Rawat remains one of the most prominent Congress leaders in Uttarakhand and has held several important positions during his long political career, including serving as the state’s Chief Minister.
The controversy has provided fresh ammunition to political rivals, who are likely to raise the issue in upcoming political battles. The Congress, meanwhile, will be closely watching the developments as the investigation progresses.
Rawat’s resignation from party posts is being seen as a significant political move, especially as Uttarakhand continues to witness intense competition between major political parties.
