Guwahati: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has delivered a resounding performance in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 of the 126 seats and securing a clear two-thirds majority.
The victory paves the way for the alliance to form the government for a third consecutive term, reinforcing its strong political foothold in the state.

Amid the celebrations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has drawn attention for his remarkably accurate pre-result prediction. A handwritten note, shared by Sarma on social media, has gone viral for closely matching the final outcome.
When polls closed in Assam on 9th April, I jot down my thoughts on a piece of paper, like I usually do, on the possible outcome of the #AssamElectionResults2026.
A month later, we've done one seat better than the best in a historic blessing by the people.

According to the note, Sarma had projected 101 seats as the best-case scenario, with lower estimates ranging between 88 and 90-plus seats.
The BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 82 seats on its own. Its allies also posted strong performances, contributing to the NDA’s overall tally.
The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) secured 10 out of 11 seats it contested, while the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 10 of the 26 seats it fought on. Together, the alliance’s performance reflects a broad-based mandate across regions.
The election proved challenging for opposition parties, particularly the Congress, which managed to win only 19 seats. Other regional players also struggled to make an impact.
Gaurav Gogoi, a prominent Congress leader, lost the Jorhat seat to BJP’s Hitendranath Goswami by a margin exceeding 23,000 votes, marking a significant upset.

The NDA’s decisive victory underscores voter confidence in the current leadership and governance model in Assam. The results suggest a preference for continuity and stability, with the BJP strengthening its independent position in the state.
Sarma revealed that he had noted down his projections immediately after polling concluded on April 9. The final tally, surpassing even his most optimistic estimate, has sparked widespread discussion about the accuracy of his political assessment.
As the new government prepares to take charge, the Assam verdict stands out as one of the most decisive outcomes in the 2026 Assembly elections.
