New Delhi: Exit polls for the 2026 Keralam Assembly elections indicate a major political upset. In the 140-seat Assembly, 71 seats are required to secure a majority; according to the latest projections, the United Democratic Front (UDF) appears poised to reach—or even surpass—this threshold.
What Do the Seat Projections Suggest?
According to the exit polls, the UDF is projected to win between 70 and 80 seats—averaging approximately 75 seats. Conversely, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is expected to be limited to a tally of 58 to 68 seats. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is projected to secure a mere 0 to 4 seats.
This clearly indicates that while the contest is primarily between the UDF and the LDF, the UDF appears to hold the upper hand.
The influence of religious communities is clearly evident in this election.
According to the exit polls:
This is the primary reason why the UDF appears to be gaining the lead.
However, the LDF has not been entirely weakened. A significant segment of the Dalit and OBC communities still appears to stand firmly with the LDF.
The NDA is projected to secure a vote share of approximately 14%; however, this does not appear to be translating into a significant number of seats. The BJP's vote share has notably increased in South Kerala, resulting in triangular contests in several constituencies.
UDF: 42.6%
LDF: 39.5%
NDA: 14.3%
In other words, while the difference in vote percentage is marginal, it appears to be having a profound impact on the seat tally.
For the post of Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan appears to be garnering approximately 31.8% support. Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition, V. D. Satheesan, is projected to receive 27.9% support. According to exit polls, the impact of anti-incumbency (public resentment against the government) is evident this time around, appearing to benefit the UDF.
The electoral contest in Keralam is extremely intriguing this time. Exit polls give the UDF an edge, though the margin is narrow. Therefore, the final verdict will be delivered on May 4th.
