Kolkata: Amid growing political tensions in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday filed an election petition before the Calcutta High Court challenging the result of the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, where she was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

According to party sources, Mamata Banerjee personally visited the High Court registry to affirm the petition seeking judicial review of the election outcome.

Suvendu Adhikari Won by Over 15,000 Votes

The Bhabanipur Assembly seat witnessed one of the most closely watched contests in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 15,105 votes, marking a significant political setback for the TMC supremo in her traditional stronghold.

Legal Challenge After Election Defeat

Through the election petition, Banerjee has challenged the validity of the election result and sought legal intervention regarding the outcome of the Bhabanipur constituency.

Details of the specific grounds raised in the petition are yet to be made public.

BJP Forms Government in West Bengal

The counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections was conducted on May 4.

Following the BJP's victory in the state elections, Suvendu Adhikari assumed office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking a major political shift in the state.

Political Battle Moves to Court

The legal challenge is expected to intensify the political rivalry between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, with the outcome of the petition likely to be closely watched by political observers across the country.

The Calcutta High Court is expected to hear the matter in the coming weeks.
