New Delhi: Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan has filed a complaint against right-wing influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj, accusing him of allegedly misusing his name and creating a false impression of political support in connection with the Jantar Mantar assault controversy.
The complaint comes after a video clip from an interview surfaced in which Bhardwaj allegedly claimed that he had the backing of several political leaders, including Chirag Paswan, while speaking about the assault on the father of a student activist during a CJP protest in July.
Reacting to the controversy, Chirag Paswan said that people often meet public representatives and take photographs, but using those interactions to claim personal association is a misuse of their names.
“Many people come to meet us in public life and take pictures. But claiming personal relations based on that is a misuse of our name,” Paswan said.
He alleged that Bhardwaj attempted to give the impression that action against him was delayed because of political connections.
The LJP (Ram Vilas) leader clarified that neither he nor his party had any association with Bhardwaj and extended support to the activist and her injured father.
Paswan urged Delhi Police to conduct a fair investigation and take strict action if allegations against Bhardwaj are proven.
“The person openly claimed to have assaulted someone severely. If no action is taken, it will send a wrong message in society,” Paswan said.
The controversy erupted after Bhardwaj was seen in an interview claiming that he had “cracked the skull” of the activist’s father during the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. The injured man reportedly required multiple stitches after the incident.
In the same interview, Bhardwaj allegedly referred to his connections with political figures and claimed support from leaders.
Delhi Police detained Swatantra Bhardwaj from Uttar Pradesh after protests demanding action against him. The detention followed a meeting between CJP representatives, Azad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad and MP Pappu Yadav with police officials.
The investigation into the allegations and the claims made in the viral video is ongoing.
