New Delhi: A fresh political controversy erupted over the ongoing NEET-UG paper leak investigation after Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, triggering strong reactions from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The exchange followed a hearing in the Supreme Court of India regarding petitions linked to the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination after reports of a paper leak.

Government Tells Court PM Is Monitoring Matter

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the government was treating the issue seriously and that Prime Minister Modi was personally monitoring the matter.

The Supreme Court sought details from the Centre regarding the ongoing investigation, the process being followed to identify lapses, and the measures being introduced to prevent future leaks.

Justice J. Narasimha also questioned how such an incident could occur despite the presence of a high-powered committee overseeing examination systems.

Rahul Gandhi’s Remark Triggers Political Row

Reacting to reports from the court proceedings, Rahul Gandhi posted on social media platform X that “PM Modi also personally supervised the NEET paper leak.”

The statement quickly drew criticism from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress MP of making irresponsible and politically motivated remarks over a sensitive issue affecting students.

BJP Leaders Criticise Congress MP

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat called the comment “absurd” and said a Leader of Opposition should focus on facts rather than sensational allegations.

BJP leader Amit Malviya also criticised Rahul Gandhi, saying it was unreasonable to suggest the Prime Minister had any role in the paper leak controversy. He accused the Congress leader of prioritising political attacks over constructive discussion on issues concerning students and examination reforms.

Investigation Continues

The NEET-UG examination, conducted on May 3 for admissions to medical courses, was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak. The case is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The controversy has intensified debate over examination security, accountability, and reforms in India’s competitive entrance exam system.
