New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party delivered a commanding performance in the Punjab Civic Body Elections 2026, emerging as the dominant force across the state by winning 220 wards. The Indian National Congress remained a distant second with 90 victories, while the Shiromani Akali Dal secured 75 wards and the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win 20 seats.

The elections, viewed as a major political test ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls, witnessed large-scale participation across urban local bodies in the state.

Massive Voter Participation Across Punjab

According to election officials, around 22.38 lakh voters cast their ballots at 3,833 polling booths spread across Punjab. The voting was held for eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils, and 20 nagar panchayats.

Authorities deployed nearly 32,000 police personnel and 35,000 election staff to maintain law and order during polling and counting operations. Nearly 1,000 polling booths were categorized as sensitive or hypersensitive due to heightened political tensions.

AAP Registers Strong Wins in Key Areas

AAP maintained a strong lead throughout the counting process and recorded major victories in several prominent regions. In Gidderbaha, the assembly constituency of Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the ruling party won 17 out of 19 wards.

The party also performed strongly in Mohali Municipal Corporation by winning multiple wards, while Sarabjeet Samana, son of AAP MLA Kulwant Singh, emerged victorious and is expected to become Mohali mayor.
