New Delhi: Four senior Punjab BJP leaders have reportedly advocated reviving the party’s alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, even as the BJP’s central leadership remains cautious about restoring the former partnership. According to sources, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, former state BJP president Sunil Jakhar, former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal and Punjab Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur have supported the proposed tie-up.
The leaders reportedly view an alliance as a potential advantage in Punjab’s increasingly competitive political landscape, where a multi-cornered contest is expected. They have also highlighted the historical significance of the BJP-SAD partnership, associated with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal.
According to their argument, the alliance represented Hindu-Sikh cooperation and could contribute to social harmony in the border state, beyond its electoral implications.
However, the BJP leadership is understood to be assessing the political risks of bringing the parties together. Sources indicate that the central leadership believes SAD’s electoral influence has weakened over the years and is reluctant to negotiate from a disadvantageous position.
The BJP is reportedly seeking a substantially larger share of seats, with discussions centred on a possible arrangement under which it could contest around 75% of constituencies. These figures have not been officially confirmed.
BJP and SAD ended their long-standing alliance in 2020 after disagreements over the Centre’s farm laws. During their previous partnership, SAD contested most seats, while the BJP fought a considerably smaller share.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the question remains whether both parties can bridge differences over political strategy and seat allocation. No final alliance agreement has been announced, and negotiations remain at a preliminary stage, according to the information available.
