New Delhi: A fresh political exchange broke out between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju over the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The war of words began after Rahul Gandhi shared a video message on women’s empowerment, following which Rijiju took a swipe at the Congress leader and questioned whether his party would support the women’s quota law “unconditionally.”
Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s video, Kiren Rijiju described his message as a “positive” one and suggested that it reflected a “change of heart” on the issue of women’s representation.
Taking the discussion towards the Women’s Reservation Bill, Rijiju posted on social media:

The remark came amid an ongoing political debate between the government and opposition parties over the timeline and conditions for implementing the law.
Rahul Gandhi responded by questioning why the government has linked the implementation of women’s reservation with delimitation.
He said that the Women’s Reservation Bill, passed in 2023, had already received support from Congress and other parties, and asked why it had not been implemented yet.
Gandhi said the government should implement the law “without any conditions.”
The Congress leader has been opposing the move to connect women’s quota with the future delimitation exercise, arguing that the reservation should be implemented in the current parliamentary and assembly structure.
The Women’s Reservation Bill 2023, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, provides for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
However, the law includes a provision that its implementation will take place after a delimitation exercise and the publication of the relevant census data.
The government has argued that delimitation is necessary to determine the number and distribution of seats before introducing the reservation system.
The political exchange came after Rahul Gandhi shared his views on women’s participation in society.
In his video message, Gandhi said women’s energy and potential often remain restricted and argued that India cannot achieve full development without greater participation and freedom for women.
He said women should have the freedom to express their views, make choices and participate equally in social, economic and political life.
The issue of women’s representation continues to remain a key point of debate between the ruling BJP-led government and opposition parties.
