Kolkata: A dramatic political confrontation unfolded in South 24 Parganas on Tuesday, as tensions escalated between the Trinamool Congress and Election Commission-appointed police observer Ajay Pal Sharma, turning the election atmosphere into what many described as a “Bollywood-style showdown.”

Protests Erupt in Falta

Protests broke out in Falta, where TMC supporters gathered outside the residence and election office of candidate Jahangir Khan. Demonstrators raised slogans accusing Sharma of “intimidating” party workers ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections 2026.

Senior party leaders and state ministers alleged that the Uttar Pradesh-cadre IPS officer was exceeding his mandate as a police observer.

‘Singham’ Warning Sparks Row

The controversy follows Sharma’s visit to the area after complaints were received by the Election Commission alleging that associates of Khan were collecting voter ID cards and threatening electors.

During the visit, Sharma—often dubbed “Singham” for his tough policing style—issued a stern warning, saying strict action would follow any attempt to influence voters. In a video that has since gone viral, he is heard cautioning Khan’s family about consequences if such activities continued.

“If He is Singham, I am Pushpa”

Responding sharply, Jahangir Khan invoked a cinematic comparison, saying:
“This is Bengal; if he is ‘Singham’, I am ‘Pushpa’. No amount of threat or coercion by BJP-appointed police officials will be allowed here.”

He further alleged that the officer and accompanying forces attempted to pressure him and his supporters.

Election Tensions Escalate

The episode has added a new layer of friction to the already charged poll environment in West Bengal, with both sides trading serious allegations. The developments come at a crucial juncture, as campaigning intensifies ahead of the next phase of voting.
