Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s voter base has seen a significant boost, with the total electorate rising to 5.73 crore following the addition of 6.36 lakh new voters during a recent enrolment drive conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Special Drive Expands Voter Base
The expansion comes after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which had earlier pegged the State’s electorate at 5.67 crore as of February 23. To ensure inclusivity, the ECI opened a special enrolment window from February 23 to March 26, allowing eligible citizens who were previously left out to register.

Women Outnumber Men Among New Voters
Of the 6,36,911 newly enrolled voters, women make up a larger share at 3.44 lakh, while men account for 2.91 lakh-reflecting a continued trend of strong female participation in the State’s electoral process.

Supplementary List to Be Released
The Commission noted that the names of these new voters will soon be available in a supplementary list for public verification.

Youth Lead the Electorate
Age-wise data released by the ECI highlights a robust and balanced voter demographic. The 18-29 age group leads with 1.21 crore voters, including 14.59 lakh first-time voters aged 18-19. Meanwhile, the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups account for 1.16 crore and 1.19 crore voters, respectively.

Growing Awareness Drives Enrolment
Officials say the surge in registrations underscores the success of targeted enrolment efforts and growing awareness among citizens, particularly younger voters, about the importance of participating in the democratic process.
