Srinagar: A political storm is brewing in Jammu and Kashmir after PDP launched a strong attack on National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq over an alleged remark that has triggered anger and debate among political circles.
PDP Baramulla spokesperson Mohammad Shafi has demanded an apology from the NC leader, accusing him of making a statement that hurt the dignity and sentiments of Kashmiris. The controversy has now turned into a fresh confrontation between two major regional political parties.
The issue is not limited to a single statement. It has opened a wider debate on how elected representatives speak about sensitive issues linked with the history, struggles and identity of the people they represent.
The controversy began after Mohammad Shafi reacted strongly to the reported statement of Tanvir Sadiq. The PDP leader said such remarks were unacceptable from a public representative and argued that political leaders must be careful while referring to the difficult experiences of ordinary people.
Shafi demanded that Tanvir Sadiq clarify his position, withdraw the alleged remark and offer an apology to the people of Kashmir. According to PDP, the issue is about respecting the emotions of people who have experienced years of social, economic and political challenges.
The controversy quickly moved beyond the statement and became a larger political battle between PDP and National Conference. Mohammad Shafi accused the NC of following a selective approach towards accountability. He alleged that the party often questions statements made by rival political groups but avoids similar scrutiny when controversies involve its own leaders.
The PDP leader said every political party and every elected representative should be answerable to the public. The National Conference has so far not given a detailed response to the allegations, leaving political discussions around the issue open.
In Jammu and Kashmir, statements related to identity, history and social conditions often carry deep emotional importance. Political leaders frequently refer to the experiences of ordinary Kashmiris while presenting their political narratives, but such references can also become controversial when people feel their struggles are being misunderstood or used for political messaging.
The latest controversy has once again highlighted the delicate balance leaders must maintain while discussing issues connected with public sentiment. For many residents, political conversations are not just about elections or parties but also about dignity, recognition and how their experiences are represented.
The PDP has used the controversy to challenge the National Conference’s political approach and question its response to statements made by its leaders. Party leaders argue that accountability should not depend on political affiliation and that all representatives must face public scrutiny.
The issue has provided PDP with an opportunity to target its regional rival and strengthen its position among voters who remain concerned about representation and governance. For the National Conference, the controversy presents another challenge as it attempts to maintain its political image amid criticism from opposition parties.
The clash between PDP and NC reflects the continuing competition between two influential regional parties of Jammu and Kashmir. Both parties have long positioned themselves as voices representing the aspirations of the people of the region, making political controversies involving their leaders highly significant.
Experts believe that such issues often become part of larger political narratives, especially when they involve emotions connected with identity and public respect. The coming days will show whether the Tanvir Sadiq remark controversy remains a short political exchange or develops into a bigger debate over leadership, accountability and representation in Jammu and Kashmir.
