New Delhi: The confrontation over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is set to intensify in Delhi, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) formally informing the Delhi Police about its planned October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar.

CJP co-convener Saurav Das submitted the formal intimation at Parliament Street Police Station on Wednesday, saying the organisation expects a large gathering of youth and supporters from across the country. The group is demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and sweeping reforms in the Election Commission of India.

CJP Submits Formal Notice to Delhi Police

Das said the party had completed the required formalities and submitted an undertaking to cooperate with authorities in maintaining law and order during the protest.

CJP has formally notified Delhi Police about its October 10 Jantar Mantar protest demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, as security is tightened across central Delhi.

The development comes amid heightened security in central Delhi. Police have deployed additional personnel around Parliament Street, the Election Commission office and other sensitive locations. More than 150 body cameras have also reportedly been deployed to record interactions, detentions and confrontations during protests.

However, Delhi Police has denied permission for the proposed October 10 demonstration, according to reports. Das questioned the need for police permission for a protest at a designated demonstration site and maintained that authorities should focus on security and traffic management.

‘Long Fight’ Over ECI Reforms

Das said the movement would continue even if Gyanesh Kumar were to resign, arguing that the CJP's larger objective is reform of the Election Commission.

The organisation has listed three major demands: Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and criminal proceedings, a freeze on the SIR exercise along with an independent inquiry, and repeal of the 2023 law governing the appointment of the CEC and Election Commissioners.

The CJP's October 10 call comes after several days of protests in Delhi by political parties, student groups and activists over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Security Tightened Ahead of October 10

The latest mobilisation has prompted heightened security preparations in central Delhi. Police have already imposed restrictions in parts of the New Delhi area amid repeated demonstrations concerning the Election Commission.

The CJP has nevertheless maintained that it intends to proceed with its planned mobilisation, making October 10 a key date in the escalating political and public campaign against the CEC.

The protests have also unfolded alongside a separate controversy involving complaints by three women journalists alleging sexual harassment during an earlier demonstration. Delhi Police has transferred those complaints to its Crime Branch for further action.
