New Delhi: Actor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Koel Mallick has resigned from the Rajya Sabha just months after taking oath as a Member of Parliament, marking another setback for the party amid growing political challenges in West Bengal.
Mallick submitted her resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, requesting that it be accepted with immediate effect. However, she has not publicly disclosed the reason behind her decision.
Koel Mallick is one of the most popular actors in the Bengali film industry. She is the daughter of veteran actor Ranjit Mallick and made her acting debut in 2003 with Nater Guru. Over the years, she has starred in several commercially successful Bengali films, earning a strong fan following.
She entered active politics with the Trinamool Congress and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. She took oath as a Member of Parliament in April 2026.
Mallick's resignation comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is facing internal challenges following its defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.

Her exit follows the resignation of senior TMC MLA Madan Mitra, who recently joined the rebel camp in the state Assembly and stepped down from party posts. Mitra cited dissatisfaction with the party's functioning and alleged excessive focus on promoting TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
In her resignation letter, Mallick thanked the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Secretariat officials for their support during her tenure but did not explain why she was stepping down. The Trinamool Congress has also not issued an official statement on her resignation.
