Darjeeling: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday assured the Gorkha community that a concrete solution to their long-pending demands would be delivered, including the withdrawal of cases related to the Gorkhaland movement.
Addressing a public rally in Darjeeling, Shah accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of suppressing the identity and history of the Gorkha people. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party would act decisively to end what he described as years of injustice.

Shah announced that cases registered against individuals involved in the Gorkhaland movement would be withdrawn before July 31. He alleged that many of these cases were politically motivated and aimed at silencing dissent in the hills.
“There are hundreds of false cases against our Gorkha brothers. We will ensure they are withdrawn,” Shah said, adding that the BJP would implement a solution that removes the need for further protests.
Stepping up his criticism, Shah launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that her government had failed to ensure safety and justice in the state.
He urged voters to bring political change in the upcoming elections, stating that the polls were an opportunity to “free Bengal from crime” and establish better governance. Shah also emphasized the need for stronger law enforcement to ensure safety, particularly for women.
The remarks come ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The results will be declared on May 4.

In the 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory with 213 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats, marking a significant rise in its presence in the state.
With renewed promises and sharp political exchanges, the upcoming polls are expected to witness an intense contest, particularly in regions like Darjeeling where identity and autonomy remain central issues.
