Story of Goddess Mahagauri

According to legend, Goddess Mahagauri was born to King Himalaya and named Parvati. At the age of eight, she remembered her past life and accepted Lord Shiva as her husband. She then began intense penance. Years of austerity without water and food left her body dark. Seeing her penance, Lord Shiva was pleased and purified her with holy water from the Ganges River. After bathing in this water, Goddess Mahagauri became radiant and dazzling like lightning.
