Chengalpattu: Sangeetha Vijay, wife of actor-politician Vijay (C. Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar), has filed a divorce petition in the Chengalpattu District Court. The petition is filed under various sections of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The petition seeks dissolution of marriage, permanent maintenance (alimony), the right to reside in the marital home, and confidentiality of the proceedings (in-camera).
According to the petition, Vijay and Sangeeta's marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998. The marriage ceremony was subsequently solemnized according to Hindu rites and rituals at Rajah Muthiah Mandapam, Egmore, Chennai, on August 25, 1999.
The early years have been described as "harmonious" with Sangeeta focusing on her family and raising her children. The couple has two children—a son and a daughter.
The petition claims that in April 2021, Sangeeta discovered Vijay's alleged relationship with an actress. She described this as deeply emotionally traumatizing and a breach of marital trust.
Although Vijay allegedly assured her of ending the relationship, the petition states that the relationship continued, leading to mental cruelty, social humiliation, and emotional neglect.
The petition also states that attempts were made to reconcile through mutual dialogue and counseling between September 2021 and February 2022 and again between August 2024 and February 2025, but no solution was reached. Ultimately, the marriage is declared "irretrievably broken."
There have been periodic speculations about Vijay and Sangeeta's marriage. Divorce rumors resurfaced, particularly after Sangeeta's absence from a major event of Vijay's political party in 2025. However, the couple had previously kept their personal lives largely out of the public eye.
Meanwhile, Vijay's film 'Jana Nayakan' also faced controversy. Its release was delayed due to the film's lack of CBFC approval. The producers moved to court but withdrew the petition after receiving no relief.
Vijay had stated in an interview that he was already aware of the possibility of his films being targeted due to his active involvement in politics. For now, the divorce petition will proceed in court, and the court will make a final decision.
