Chennai: The scope of investigation into the high-profile drug trafficking case in Tamil Nadu is steadily expanding. The Income Tax Department (IT) has also become active in the matter. Large-scale raids were conducted on Monday at premises linked to former DMK leader and filmmaker Jaffer Sadiq. The Election Flying Squad team was also involved in the operation.

Raids at Multiple Locations in Chennai

Income Tax Department teams raided at least 10 locations in Chennai, including Egmore, Kilpauk, Anna Salai, and Perambur. Sadiq's residence in Foreshore Estate was also searched. Officials conducted a thorough investigation of properties and documents linked to Sadiq.

Case Related to a ₹2000 Crore Drug Trafficking Case

Jaffer Sadiq was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in March 2024. He is accused of being the mastermind of a ₹2000 crore drug trafficking network. According to investigating agencies, Sadiq mixed the pseudoephedrine drug with multigrain mix and grated coconut and sent it abroad, primarily to Australia and New Zealand.

NCB also arrested associates

The NCB arrested at least five of Sadiq's associates in this case, including his close associate Sadhanadan. While Sadiq was absconding, the NCB team broke into his Santhome home and searched it on court orders.

ED has already conducted raids

A few days after Sadiq's arrest, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also raided approximately 35 locations. The ED conducted this action with the money laundering angle in mind and the investigation was initiated based on the NCB's case.

Scope of investigation has broadened

Now that the Income Tax Department has joined, the investigation has become more comprehensive. The agencies are investigating Sadiq's financial transactions, assets, and sources of illegal income.

Political and film circles are in turmoil

Jaffer Sadiq previously held the position of Deputy Organizer of the DMK party's NRI wing (Chennai West). His arrest and the ongoing investigation have created a stir in the political and film circles.

More significant revelations are expected in the coming days, as multiple central agencies are working together to investigate this network.
