Tamil Nadu CM Vijay wins floor test
Chennai: The newly-formed Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief Minister Vijay, successfully cleared the floor test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, securing a decisive mandate.
Out of 171 members present, 144 voted in favor of the confidence motion, including support from rebel AIADMK MLAs, while only 22 voted against. Five MLAs were absent during the voting process.
The opposition, led by Udhayanidhi Stalin of the DMK, criticized CM Vijay for meeting with rebel AIADMK members, questioning the integrity of the process. "Is this genuine change, or is this mere horse-trading? Is this the 'clean government' you promised?" Stalin remarked. He urged the TVK government to prioritize governance over social media posturing.
Responding to the allegations, CM Vijay defended his actions, emphasizing that his government would operate in a secular and efficient manner—"at the speed of a horse"—and insisted that there would be no compromises through horse-trading. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue the welfare schemes initiated by the previous administration.
Meanwhile, the DMK staged a walkout from the House, highlighting the political tensions in the Assembly. The formation of the TVK government has also exposed fractures within the AIADMK, signaling a new phase of political realignment in the state.
