Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting of Members of Parliament from his party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), to discuss concerns over the proposed delimitation amendment Bill.
The meeting comes amid rising political opposition in southern states, with leaders arguing that the exercise could alter parliamentary representation in a manner unfavourable to the region.
Escalating his opposition, Stalin called for statewide black flag protests. He urged citizens to hoist black flags at their homes and in public spaces as a symbolic expression of dissent.
Describing the proposed legislation as a “massive historic injustice,” Stalin warned of consequences and said his stance reflected both his role as chief minister and “a self-respecting Tamil.”
The controversy centres on proposals linked to delimitation and an increase in Lok Sabha seats from 543 to potentially 850. Leaders in the South fear that population-based redistribution could reduce their representation in Parliament relative to northern states.
Stalin questioned whether states like Tamil Nadu were being “punished” despite contributing significantly to India’s economic and social development.
Stalin accused the Centre of attempting to push through the delimitation exercise during the election period, assuming parties would be preoccupied with campaigning.
“I am not only the Chief Minister but also the leader of the DMK, a massive political movement. You will see a Tamil Nadu you have not seen before… Every family will take to the streets,” he said.
Invoking B. R. Ambedkar, he added a direct warning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a “final warning” and asserting that Tamil Nadu would resist and prevail.
Seeking broader support, Stalin said he is reaching out to leaders and MPs from multiple states to build a united front against the proposed changes.
In a related development, Revanth Reddy has suggested a “hybrid model” for seat allocation, proposing that a portion of additional seats be distributed on a pro rata basis to maintain balance among states.
Stalin responded by asserting that southern states stand united in ensuring a “just and equitable future.”

The developments come ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23, adding political significance to the issue. Stalin also held discussions with party district secretaries to assess the potential impact of delimitation on the state.
He has earlier alleged that related legislative moves, including provisions on women’s reservation, may widen disparities between regions.
With multiple states voicing concerns, the delimitation debate is emerging as a key national issue, touching upon representation, federal balance, and political equity. The Centre is yet to formally respond to the latest round of objections.
