Chennai: Traveling on national highways in Tamil Nadu is set to become more expensive starting April 1st. Reports indicate that toll fees will be increased at 28 toll plazas across the state. This increase is part of the annual review of toll rates on national highways.

After the new rules come into effect, light vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans may have to pay 10 to 40 rupees more than the current toll fee. Toll fees for trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles may increase by 50 to 200 rupees.

Fees to increase at these toll plazas

The new toll rates will apply to several major toll plazas in the state. These include toll plazas at Tindivanam, Athur, Bogalur, Boothakudi (Pudukottai), Chennasamudram, Chittampatti, Ettur, Kaniyur, Kappalur, Keelakuppam, Krishnagiri, Lembalakudi, Lakshmanpatti, Mathur, Nellore, Nanguneri, Sriperumbudur, Pallikonda, Paranoor, Pattarai Perumbudur, Vagaikulam, S.V. Puram, Salaipudur, Shenbagampettai, Surapattu, Tiruppachethi, Vanagaram, Viralimalai, and Vaniyambadi.

Commuters and transport vehicles passing through these locations will now have to pay higher tolls than before.

Monthly pass fees may also increase

Monthly pass fees are also available for those who regularly use these toll plazas. According to reports, the monthly pass fee may be fixed between ₹300 and ₹350. This may provide some relief to local daily commuters, although an increase in overall expenses will still be felt.

Possible Impact on Transportation and Commodity Prices

Experts believe that the impact of the toll fee hike will not be limited to passengers. Higher tolls for heavy vehicles, such as trucks and freight vehicles, could increase transportation costs.

When freight costs increase, it gradually impacts market prices. Consequently, a slight increase in the prices of essential commodities may also be observed.

Double Burden on Travelers

Concerns are already being raised about a potential shortage of petrol and diesel in the state. In such a situation, the increase in toll fees could pose a double burden for travelers and transport operators.

The uncertainty of fuel prices and the increase in toll rates are expected to increase travelers' expenses. Those involved in the transportation sector are also expressing their concerns about this decision.
