New Delhi: India's maritime sector has grown rapidly over the past decade. The Sagarmala Programme has modernized ports, enhanced connectivity, and improved cargo handling capacity. According to an official factsheet, this initiative has also accelerated the country's port-based industrial development.

315 Projects Completed

According to the government, a total of 845 projects were initiated under this programme, with an estimated cost of ₹6.06 lakh crore. Of these, 315 projects worth ₹1.57 lakh crore have been completed as of March 24, 2026. Another 210 projects are currently under construction, and 320 are in the planning stage.

Sagarmala 2.0 to Boost Investment

A provision of ₹85,482 crore has been made for Sagarmala 2.0, which is expected to boost investments worth approximately ₹3.6 lakh crore. This phase focuses on further strengthening the country's maritime economy.

Record cargo handling and improved efficiency

India's major ports handled 915.17 million tons of cargo in FY 2025-26, exceeding the target of 904 million tons. This represents a year-on-year growth of 7.06 percent. Furthermore, ship turnaround times have also improved significantly, reducing from 96 hours in 2014 to 49.5 hours in 2025.

India's global presence grows

Nine Indian ports are now among the top 100 ports in the world. Visakhapatnam Port has secured its place among the top 20 ports in the world in terms of container traffic.

Inland Waterways and Benefits to Fishermen

Cargo movement through inland waterways in the country has increased from 18.10 MTPA in 2013-14 to 145.50 MTPA in 2024-25, an increase of nearly 700 percent. Additionally, 11 fishing harbor projects have been completed at a cost of ₹1,057 crore, directly benefiting more than 30,000 fishermen.

Improving Employment and Livelihoods

The Sagarmala program is expected to create approximately 10 million jobs, including 4 million direct and 6 million indirect jobs. This initiative is not only strengthening infrastructure but also improving the livelihoods of coastal communities.
