Karnataka: A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka for allegedly murdering a teacher over a ₹13 lakh loan dispute, police said on Wednesday. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns over escalating financial conflicts.
The victim, identified as Jyoti, was a resident of Kalaburagi and worked as a teacher in Bidar district. Her body was initially found unidentified near the Kamalapur-Kalmood road.

Police began their investigation after a local resident reported the discovery of a burnt female body. A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Kamalapur Police Station.
During the investigation, the accused, Amar, a resident of the Kapnoor area who runs a milk parlour, was identified and taken into custody. According to police, he had borrowed ₹13 lakh from the victim and was under pressure to repay the amount.
Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police Adduru Srinivasulu said the victim had repeatedly demanded repayment and had warned of legal action. Fearing consequences, the accused allegedly planned the murder.
Police said the accused took the victim in a vehicle towards the Kamalapur-Kalmood road on April 4. During the journey, he reportedly stopped the vehicle on the pretext of checking the engine.
When the victim stepped out, he allegedly threw chilli powder on her face and attacked her with a sharp weapon. After the murder, he is said to have poured fuel on the body and set it ablaze in an attempt to destroy evidence before fleeing the scene.

Based on the accused’s statement and evidence collected, police arrested him and produced him before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Authorities said further investigation is underway to gather additional evidence and establish the sequence of events.
The case highlights how financial disputes can escalate into serious crimes, prompting calls for greater awareness and legal recourse in such matters.
